Summer Qamp
dir. Jen Markovitz, Canada 2023, 80 min., 14+, film with Polish subtitles
Not everyone feels comfortable in every space. For many, a summer camp held in Alberta, Canada, is the only opportunity to finally be themselves. Each year, queer teenagers from across Canada gather there to spend part of their vacation together. They differ in life experiences, backgrounds, and relationships with parents and peers. Some have already come out, while others are preparing for it. Some find it easier to fit into the group, while others fear their introversion may be a hindrance. However, none of this matters. What’s important is that each person is in a safe place where they can meet new people, share their passions, discuss their future plans, and, most importantly, allow themselves moments of carefree joy.
Topics: queer, community, summer camp, oral histories, relationships, being oneself
